This collection of essays, which Liu Kang wrote over 44 years, offers an insight into the artist's myriad interests: interior design, music, literature, dance, photography, medical science, and the visual arts. Throughout the essays, Liu Kang's contributions as a first generation Nanyang artist and art educator come to the fore through his thoughts and ideas about art societies, exhibitions, artists, the development of art education, and the growth of art in Singapore and the region. Liu Kang wrote his essays in Chinese. They have been translated into English for this volume, and are accompanied by commentaries that help contextualise one's reading. This volume also contains snapshots of the artist's life – from old photographs of Liu Kang travelling or painting, to that of the people he wrote about in his essays. |

The Story of Yeh Chi Wei (2 Volumes)S$70 (before GST) Available at Kinokuniya, Times, PageOne and Select To order, please email Michelle Tay at michelle_tay@nhb.gov.sg ISBN: 978-981-08-5026-5 Vol. 1 (Hardbk.) 296 pp. and 150 colour illustrations. ISBN: 978-981-08-5929-9 Vol. 2 (CD-Rom) 695 pp. and 643 colour illustrations. “Yeh’s life story is a compelling one and has never been told before. For that reason, both the exhibition and the accompanying book are titled The Story of Yeh Chi Wei – one of those occasions in art when biography matters as much as the image.” – Clarissa Oon, The Straits Times (8 July 2010) Yeh Chi Wei was a Singaporean artist, educator and leader. Like the other pioneer Nanyang artists, Yeh received formal instruction in painting in China before he came over to Singapore in 1937. His aesthetics were radically shaped by his new life in Malaya as well as travels with the Ten Men Group to other parts of Southeast Asia. Over time Yeh’s name has become strangely obscure. The exhibition and catalogue tell the story of the life and works of this significant and enigmatic figure. The essays in both volumes provide insights about Yeh Chi Wei’s artistic practice, the influence of diverse cultural and historical resources in his paintings, and his legacy. There are newly-commissioned essays as well as reproduced historical publications, including eight essays by Yeh Chi Wei himself (written and published between 1960 and 1972) and all past Ten Men catalogues. All Chinese texts are accompanied by new English translations, and vice versa. |
