The contexts in which his works were created consist of a colourful map of diverse cultures, places, influences, from China, Europe and Southeast Asia.

The cross-cultural richness in Liu Kang's way of seeing and art making are explored in four essays by curators and art researchers. These essays present fresh insights about the artist's engagement with European and Chinese modernisms in a Singaporean context.

The book also contains close to 200 colour illustrations and archival photographs as well as an index and a glossary.

Liu Kang: Essays on Art and Culture is a testament to the inexorable passion of an artist who knew no boundaries. This collection of essays, which Liu Kang wrote over 44 years, offers an insight into the artist's myriad interests: interior design, music, literature, dance, photography, medical science, and the visual arts.

Throughout the essays, Liu Kang's contributions as a first generation Nanyang artist and art educator come to the fore through his thoughts and ideas about art societies, exhibitions, artists, the development of art education, and the growth of art in Singapore and the region.

Liu Kang wrote his essays in Chinese. They have been translated into English for this volume, and are accompanied by commentaries that help contextualise one's reading. This volume also contains snapshots of the artist's life – from old photographs of Liu Kang travelling or painting, to that of the people he wrote about in his essays.

“Yeh’s life story is a compelling one and has never been told before. For that reason, both the exhibition and the accompanying book are titled The Story of Yeh Chi Wei – one of those occasions in art when biography matters as much as the image.” – Clarissa Oon, The Straits Times (8 July 2010)

Yeh Chi Wei was a Singaporean artist, educator and leader. Like the other pioneer Nanyang artists, Yeh received formal instruction in painting in China before he came over to Singapore in 1937. His aesthetics were radically shaped by his new life in Malaya as well as travels with the Ten Men Group to other parts of Southeast Asia.

Over time Yeh’s name has become strangely obscure. The exhibition and catalogue tell the story of the life and works of this significant and enigmatic figure.

The essays in both volumes provide insights about Yeh Chi Wei’s artistic practice, the influence of diverse cultural and historical resources in his paintings, and his legacy. There are newly-commissioned essays as well as reproduced historical publications, including eight essays by Yeh Chi Wei himself (written and published between 1960 and 1972) and all past Ten Men catalogues. All Chinese texts are accompanied by new English translations, and vice versa.

Asian Artists Series -
Cheong Soo Pieng: Visions of Southeast Asia

Edited by Yeo Wei Wei

Contributors: Grace Tng, Seng Yu Jin, Yeo Wei Wei

S$42 (before GST)

Available at Kinokuniya, Times, PageOne and Select

ISBN: 978-981-08-6422-4

Cheong Soo Pieng was a pioneer artist who created visually fresh pictures of Southeast Asia’s landscapes and people. By marrying the artistic traditions of the East and the West, Soo Pieng broke new ground in the way the tropics were portrayed.

Common Southeast Asian subjects — a fisherman’s kelong, two sarong-clad women on the way to the market, a group of people busy drying fish, the graceful figure of a Balinese dancer — take on new stylised forms through Soo Pieng’s deft use of pictorial devices and techniques from different cultures and traditions such as Chinese ink painting, Western oil painting, Cubism, geometric abstraction and wayang kulit.

This book is the first of its kind on Soo Pieng. The 94 colour plates present the reader with the breadth and complexity of this Nanyang artist’s extensive oeuvre. The chapters include a wealth of personal photographs as well as the latest research on the artist. Pictures of recently unearthed drawings, sketches, watercolours and woodcut prints shed further light on Soo Pieng’s personal philosophy and artistic ambitions.
